Ah, July. A month full of doctor appointments. It used to be May because I’d schedule everything around my birthday just so I’d remember. Over the years, schedules have slipped and now it seems like everything is turning up in July.

Last week I had my “well-woman” annual check up. I like it — for once I get to go to the doctor because I’m “well”.

Today was a follow-up with my PCP. In addition to my annual physical, he has to see me every so often because of some of the meds I take. So we chat for about 15 minutes while he listens to my heart and lungs, then he sends me out for blood work and I’m good for another 4-5 months.

Next week I have  a bone density scan and see my rheumatologist. The bone density scan has always been great and with the terrific results from my recent spinal MRI, I’m expecting this one to be good as well.

This will be the first time I’ve seen my rheumatologist since starting Arava and the Paleo Diet. Both seem to be helping and I was four pounds lighter today when I saw my PCP than the last time I was in. However, I expect my rheumatologist to inject either my hip or my knee. As badly as I hate steroid injections, that will tell you how badly my hip and knee are bothering me. For various reasons, I haven’t been able to be as “good” on the diet the last few days as I should be. While it didn’t bother me at first, I’m starting to feel the results of being off the diet and I really can tell the difference. My knees woke me up last night in pain, and they haven’t done that since starting the diet.

I’m really lucky that I have some terrific doctors that are not only excellent, but they appear to care about me as a person as well as a patient. I’m even more lucky that I have affordable health insurance that lets me see those doctors as much as I need to. I’m not sure what I’d do without it. My husband and my prescription drugs are close to $4,000/month before insurance (nearly $2,000 for my Enbrel, alone). When I count my blessings, that’s one of the things I count first.
