Most of us are familiar with the story of Quasimodo, aka the Hunchback of Notre Dame. He was a bell ringer who lived at the cathedral and the bells caused hearing loss and contributed to his insanity. I’m starting to understand how he felt. In addition to the long list of other things that have decided to inflict me, I’ve developed tinnitus (ringing in the ears).
I first noticed it a few weeks ago when I was having issues with elevated blood pressure and I thought that might be the cause. I’ve since resolved the blood pressure issues, but the ringing continues.
I don’t notice it most of the time because there is a level of ambient noise around that overrides it. However, there are times — such as when it’s quiet and I’m trying to fall asleep — that it is really, really noticeable.
Like poor Quasimodo, it’s driving me nuts.
There is no known cure for it. Some of the things that have been found helpful, such as diuretics (of all things), I’m already taking. The best I can hope is that it’s transient and one of these days I’ll wake up and the bells will be silent.
I hope you have peace and quiet in your day. Thanks for checking in.
